The Myth of Mental Illness: Foundations of a Theory of Personal Conduct
by Thomas Szasz
The Myth of Mental Illness: Foundations of a Theory of Personal Conduct
Within a year of the first publication of this book the Commissioner of the NY State Dept. of Mental Health demanded Szasz be dismissed from his university position for failing to "believe" in mental illness. In this book he discusses in detail the history of medicine, the metaphorical nature of the use of terms like "ill" and "sick" in relation to a "mind", and how the ideology of psychiatry is false and leads to oppression of the public. The "religious" nature of modern psychiatry shows clearly through as it's proponents demand "proper belief" and "correct allegiance to established dogma" just as did any witch burner in the 16th century. Szasz shows the concept of "mental illness" to be as flimsy as were the past similar stigmatizing concepts of "witchcraft" and "heresy".

Szasz argues convincingly against the entire psychiatric paradigm while clearly showing it's primary nature as a modern "scientific" mythology. Better than anyone, he makes it clear how poor thinking and poorer science have given us modern psychiatry.

Now available in a Harper Colophon edition, this classic book has revolutionized thinking throughout the Western world about the nature of the psychiatric profession and the moral implications of its practices.

"It is no exaggeration to state that Szasz's work raises major social issues which deserve the attention of policy-makers and indeed of all informed and socially conscious Americans. . . Quite probably he has done more than any other man to alert the American public to the potential dangers of an excessively psychiatrized society." - Edwin M. Schur, The Atlantic

"Cogently challenges the basic model of psychiatry, 'mental illness,' and calls into question much of what psychiatrists now do." - Social Science

"Thomas Szasz's volume is enormously courageous and highly informative, and it makes fascinating reading for anyone with a serious interest in the problem of psycho-
pathology. . . bold and often brilliant." - Science

THOMAS SZASZ, M.D., is considered a brilliant revolutionary thinker by some - a dangerous renegade by others. In either case, the author of The Manufacture of Madness, Schizophrenia: The Sacred Symbol of Psychiatry, and Sex by Prescription is one of the most important writers in present-day psychiatry.
