Therapy, Counseling, Beware the "Talking" Cure

It seems that each week brings with it another psychological theory. There appears to be nearly as many pop psychology theories as there are psychologists! Walk into any large bookstore and take a look at the wide variety of titles in the "psychology" section. There is a reason for such a large number of divergent theories and views within this subject.

This is because this field suffers from a preponderance of opinion, novel notions, and even wishful thinking instead of any basis in legitimate careful observation or "science". A trait of any legitimate science is that the majority of the members of the field agree upon basic concepts, theories and models - because these things actually refer to valid existing facts of reality - whereas far too many of the concepts, theories, and models of modern psychology refer to little outside of the imagination of the psychologist who asserts and believes the current trendy pop psychological notion.

Generally, what positive results do occur from the apparent application of any modern psychological approach has little to do with the theory or process itself, and much more depends upon the natural personal ability of the therapist or counselor to care and simply be a good listener, thereby enabling and also encouraging the "patient" to figure things out for themselves. Various "therapies" can also cause much harm due to their directive or evaluative nature.
