Battle for the
Mind: A Physiology of Conversion and Brain-Washing
ABOUT THE BOOK * * * This book gives very clear explanations of the concepts of "conditioning" and "brainwashing". Sargant offers many examples of the physiology of these practices, both from history and from psychiatric literature. Although the theory of "conditioning" is associated with B.F. Skinner, Sargant is no strict behaviorist. He tries to be objective and bases his views on observation. While many psychologists and psychiatrists effectively ignore and attempt to eradicate the notion of consciousness (as the Skinnerians did), Sargant's work is geared toward at making it possible for people to have more awareness of their consciousness -- and to thereby protect themselves from organized efforts to usurp it.
