Experience and Education
by John Dewey
Experience and Education by John Dewey
In this book Dewey discusses the importance of experience ad nauseam. In a typical and traditional Darwinian and behaviorist approach, Dewey places the entire importance of life and human actions upon the environment. He views education as only the effect of the environment upon the person. Naturally, as with all similar one-sided approaches to any subject, the person themselves, their mind, and the part they each play in the world is ignored. This is the philosophical flaw with Dewey, and it's a major one - the individual is largely ignored along with all concepts of personal achievement, responsibility and capability. The group is all and the individual is nothing. Needless to say, Dewey was a socialist and a humanist.

Understanding Dewey and modern education's infatuation with him and his heirs sheds much light on why education is a failure and getting worse despite continual increases of funding. Simply, all the money in the world can't make an inherently flawed system produce positive results. The proponents of "more funding" for education will always experience failure despite all the increasing funding, because the ideas modern education are based upon are severely flawed. The problem is not a lack of money - the problem is modern psychology's involvement with education.

More from the master of modern educational madness - minor ideas placed into positions of elevated importance, complex concepts which can rarely be applied, and over-emphasis on the group & society instead of on the child, development of intellectual ability, personal responsibility, individualism and legitimate self-improvement. Discover how truly absurd notions and severely misplaced importances can parade as "science", "fact" and "modern advancement", and sadly be accepted by far too many who should know better, by reading the theories and ideas from the mouth of Dewey himself.

John Dewey is a primary reason for the failure of modern public education. It is necessary to understand his ideas and where modern educational ideas come from to truly understand why and how modern education is failing, and will continue to fail until severed from the subject of psychology.

This book goes through Dewey's various ideas and approaches to education. Read it with the viewpoint of understanding where exactly modern education went wrong.
