the Sugar Habit

There's the old saying that sugar is poison.
After reading Lick the Sugar Habit, you'll be convinced of that.
Americans each consume more than 150 pounds of sugar and related sweeteners
each year. It's pretty easy for it to add up when you consider that there
are 17 teaspoons of sugar in a single can of Coke. Author Nancy Appleton
delineates how this sugar over consumption wreaks havoc with our immune
and endocrine systems, leading to chronic conditions including arthritis,
osteoporosis, diabetes, asthma, and hypoglycemia, along with the usual
suspects such as cavities and periodontal disease. Appleton admits that
she herself used to be a sugar addict, preferring to take her sweets in
the form of chocolate, and consequently suffered from numerous allergies,
plus bronchitis, pneumonia, and even a chest tumor that turned out to be
a huge calcium deposit that resulted from her body's inability to process
the pounds of sugar she consumed.
The book starts with thorough quizzes to
determine if you really are a "sugarholic" and to test for sugar-related
food allergies. Appleton then offers three distinct plans for weaning yourself
from the sweet stuff and starting your new "low-sugar life." The best part
is the dozens of easy, low-sugar, high-flavor recipes such as Hot Asparagus
Soup and Pumpkin Pie.
While Appleton has a Ph.D. and has been studying
nutrition for years, she doesn't go into unnecessary scientific details
when she explains what those little sugar cubes do to your body. This is
a thoroughly readable, eye-opening guide to changing your diet - and your
health - for the better.

We eat 153 pounds of sugar (1996) per
person per year.
My book shows the chemical pathway that
sugar takes from the time you eat as little as two teaspoons of sugar until
the time it suppresses your immune system. Self help techniques are also
given to stop the habit and sweet desserts without sugar.

Scientific claims sketchy but consistent
with others who are
are writing on this subject. Read "The
Yeast Connection", by Dr. William Crook (and "The
Yeast Connection and the Woman", "The
Body Ecology Diet", by Donna Gates, "The
Food Doctor", by Vicki Edgson Dipion and Ian Marber Dipion. Also,
"Potatoes, Not Prozac".
The author does seem bent on this one cause
and, therefore, many of the conclusions feel incomplete. There is much
good in this book. Especially the list and categories of foods.
Take it from one who lost most of the "evil"
symptoms of sugar poisoning by eliminating it for one year. Thought I was
becoming diabetic, passed out almost every afternoon and woke up with a
hangover, had symptoms of MS, had a red rash on my face, itched all over,
ached all over, cried all the time, had symptoms of bipolar disorder. You
name it. They all disappear in my life when the sugar does.
If you suspect you have a problem read any
book on the symptoms of sugar addiction.

This book is outstanding!!!
I recommend this book especially to anyone
who has a degenerative disease, such as arthritis, osteoporsis, cancer,
etc. If you want to avoid these diseases, you should read this book! I
have fibromyalgia. After eliminating sugar, I feel much better. I no longer
need to take drugs for energy (such as steroids) and pain relief. This
book gives you a list of things you can eat (it's a long list) as well
as what you should avoid. It has changed the way I shop for food.

sugar and its terrible effects on the
body
I read this book about 1 year ago, and since
then I have made major changes in my diet, following many of the suggestions
in the book. It is amazing what a difference sugar makes in your health
and energy level. I used to have at least 2 and sometimes 7 hypoglycemic
attacks a week. I now haven't had one in over 10 months! If you have a
sugar addiction, hypoglycemia, or diabetes I suggest this book highly!!!
Even if you just want to improve your immune system and not get sick as
much, this book is for you. I have been striving for better health since
I was 6 months pregnant, and this was one of a few integral books in my
success.

Fascinating insight into why I can't
stop eating chocolate!
I am a chocoholic. Since I was in my 20s,
I steadily gained weight, and after my second child was born, I no longer
had any kind of equilibrium at all. Of late, other unpleasant symptoms
such as gas and increasing hypoglycemic-like symptoms were troubling me,
in
addition to being nearly obese. My brother died last year of a heart attack
at age 42, and that coupled with my own increasing cholesterol levels induced
me to search for help. My doctor recommended "Mastering
the Zone" but my bookstore didn't have it, so I picked up this
book. Long curious about the truth of chocoholism and the effects of sugar
on health, I snatched it up. I have greatly reduced the amount of sugar
in my diet, and after a week, still feel kind of "loopy", but I hope in
another week my energy will pick up. I think this was the boost I needed
to improve my eating habits.

Fantastic information on how sugar affects
your life.
I've read hundreds of books on nutrition.
This book is among the best of them. Anyone who wants to get a grip on
their physical, emotional, and mental performance would do
well to read this book.

People DO have various problems with life.
Instead of naming and redefining these problems as various "mental diseases",
and labeling people with them, as is currently done within the psychiatric
community, these problems with life and living are best understood and
addressed outside of the traditional psychiatric paradigm. Why?
Because psychiatric "treatments" such as ECT, lobotomy, and powerful psychotropic
drugs are barbaric, based upon severe faulty scientific methodology, and
quite simply, harm people.
